Description

Folk Art Wood Carving of the “Mad Hatter,” late 19th/early 20th Century. Interpretation of the character from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (first published in 1865) and the sequel Through the Looking Glass. Although called only “The Hatter” in Carroll’s books, the character became known as the “Mad Hatter because he was, well, quite “mad.” The popular term “mad as a hatter” predated publication of Carroll’s books. Provenance: Purchased from Northeast Auctions/Ron Bourgeault in the 1990’s. In white pine, old paint, some loss on the nose, chip in removable hat, 16” tall.
